Using our Minds!!!

This month the kindergarten students are using their brains in many different ways. In our Mind Up curriculum the students are learning about their brain and how to use their "wise owl" to handle situations and not their "guard dog!" When the students guard dog takes over the child experiences flight or fight and cannot learn or listen to retrieve information in this state. The students are learning to use deep breathing to control these feelings and to focus on one activity at a time. All five senses are used to be good listeners. In the picture below the children are deeply breathing feeling the stuffy on their tummies to focus on the raising and falling of their chests. Ask your child about their brain, they may have some interesting information to share with you.
Next the student's brains were challenged to create a Leprechaun trap. A lot of imagination was used and each student explained to the rest of the class how it will work. Time will tell!!

Finally the students were challenged to sort jelly beans, count jelly beans and then write down the correct amount of tally marks for each colour of bean. A lot of math work, but such a fun manipulative to work with. Tomorrow the students will graph their results and then their jelly beans can go home where subtraction will be studied!!
