Baby Who?

Thanks for all those baby pictures!  We sure have an adorable Kindergarten class! The students loved looking at their own baby picture and had fun guessing who their classmates were. It was not hard to tell for some students with their distinguishing characteristics and others were a bit more difficult with their change in hair colour and length and so on! I wonder what they will look like as teenagers! I guess tomorrow we will see what everyone looks like when they are 100, as we dress for our spirit day.

Leduc Public Library Field Trip

We braved the elements this afternoon and went for our tour and program at the Leduc Public library. The walk actually turned out to be wonderful, not too cold and very sunny. At the library the students had a tour of the facility which ended in the children's section to learn about taking care of books, listening to some awesome stories and making a cute book mark. Each child received a changing colour pencil as well. Our session ended with the students looking at any book they chose, playing with puppets, or making puzzles. Our students had an enriching experience and many expressed interest in wanting to come back with their parents. The library truly has lots to offer children and adults alike and I hope you make it a regular pit stop in your lives. Thanks to the parents who were able to join us!

Safely On Board!!

Safety First!

September has flown by with a focus on following rules and being safe in school and out of school. The students are very good at reciting all kinds of safety rules and are now putting those rules into practice. One exciting presentation on bus safety was participated in this month and now the students will try out the new experience for real when going to Safety City and actually riding on the school bus. At Safety City we will be practicing our pedestrian safety rules. Please have your child show you what they know in the near future. Here are some highlight pictures below of our Safely On Board Presentation!

September Beginnings

We are off to an excellent start in kindergarten. The children are learning our routines and rules as well as getting to know each other! I predict an amazing year in kindergarten. It is surprising how responsible and independent the students can become in such a short while. They are learning to put away their belongings, turn in their kanga pouches, sign in on the smart board for attendance, as well as other numerous tasks. I know your child will be eager to show you the ins and outs of our kindergarten program and hope you will email me soon with a date you would like to roster. Our roster schedule starts up on Sept. 23rd. with either am or pm slots. Remember to check our ECS calendar to see when your child has show and share too. Thanks for your help in making this a great start to our school year!

Spring is here!

Mrs. Murphy's kindergarten class is so excited to watch the development of our caterpillars into butterflies. They progress so quickly! By next week they may already be chrysalis's! We are also following the growth of our bean plants which is interesting to see how quickly they grow as well. When you talk with your child he or she should be able to explain some of these stages of growth in both the plant and insect! If you plant a garden or flower bed I am sure your child would love to be involved in this process, as all students have shown interest and knowledge when learning about plant growth! Have fun planting!!

Climbing the beanstalk!

Exciting Fairy Tales!

We are having lots of fun so far with our fairy tale unit. The students are thinking about what is imaginary as opposed to what is real. The students posed for pictures to show they could climb our beanstalk! It will be fun at the end of this month to plant our own real beans and see how tall our beanstalks can grow. We are doing a lot of measuring, so talking about and comparing items that are longer, shorter, same, heavier, lighter, etc. would be beneficial for your child. Most students seem to be getting a sense of measurement.

Responsibility and Nutrition

The kindergarten students are officially "movie stars" now! We had the official showing of our Responsibility video and it was unanimous that they did an awesome job on their first ever movie.  I am so proud of each and every student, it was not an easy project! I hope they also learned a bit about being responsible along the way.

Now that this project is over we are going to focus more on healthy eating. We will talk about the food groups and what food is healthy for us. This is will all come together at the end of the month with a shared nutritious snack!  I am hoping that after the students learn about healthy food they will be able to help you prepare a nutritious snack to be shared with a friend. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at our student led conference at the end of this month on March 25th between 5pm - 7pm. Your child will be excited to show you some of the things they do on a regular basis in kindergarten.

Fire Safety!

As well as working on; valentines," bucket filling,"and olympics this month we are also concentrating on fire safety. The students are completing a series of four lessons, my friend the firefighter, stop, drop and roll, crawl low under smoke and safe for play, keep away. All students should be able to answer your questions about fire safety by the middle of next week! We are hoping to have a special firefighter drop in the classroom to show us his gear and later in the year have the Leduc Fire Dept. drop by with their fire truck. The students are busy building their own school fire truck and pictures will follow soon.

The Mitten and more..............

The kindergarten students have been having a great time listening to and now acting out the story, "The Mitten" by Jan Brett. They are learning to make predictions, remember story details and sequence. All the students have been participating with great enthusiasm. They have recently brought home their paper mitten and animals to tell you the Mitten story, please encourage them to do so! We took a break from Jolly Phonics this week in order to fit in report card assessment, but please review their sounds in preparation for moving on next week. I am impressed at how well everyone it doing! Keep up the great work! Thanks for the super team work.

New Year Beginnings

Well we are getting back into the swing of things.  Our first SLP workshop was very informative and the students were introduced to the listening animals.  We will continue to use these descriptions throughout the year.
Owl - Listen with your eyes, look at who you are talking to
Gorilla - Listen with your brain, turn on your brain to listen
Hedgehog - Listen with your hands, keep your hands still and empty
Elephant - Listen with your ears, open your ears to listen
Bird - Listen with you mouth, wait your turn to talk
Aligator - Listen with your body, keep your body still

All students are working on being good listeners at our circle time.
